What Are the Symptoms of Squamous Cell Carcinoma?
Keep an eye out for any firm, red bumps on your skin. You might also notice flat sores with a scaly crust or new growths that bleed or don’t heal. These symptoms often appear on areas that get a lot of sun, like your face, ears, neck, and hands. If you see any of these signs, make sure to visit your healthcare provider as soon as possible.

What Causes Squamous Cell Carcinoma?
You get Squamous Cell Carcinoma mainly from too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV rays damage the DNA in your skin cells, causing them to grow uncontrollably. If you have fair skin, a history of sunburns, or if you use tanning beds, you increase your risk. Having a weakened immune system or a history of skin cancer also raises your risk.

How Is Squamous Cell Carcinoma Treated?
Your treatment for SCC will depend on its size, location, and stage. Here are the common options:
1. Surgical Excision: Your doctor will cut out the cancerous skin along with some healthy tissue around it.
2. Mohs Surgery: This method removes the cancer layer by layer, checking each layer until no cancer cells remain.
3. Cryotherapy: Your doctor will freeze the cancer cells with liquid nitrogen to destroy them.
4. Topical Medications: You might use creams or ointments directly on the skin to treat early-stage SCC.
5. Radiation Therapy: This is used for cancers that are difficult to remove surgically or if surgery isn’t an option for you.

To protect yourself, avoid excessive sun exposure and get regular skin checks. If you notice any unusual changes in your skin, consult your healthcare provider right away. Early detection and treatment can make a big difference in your outcome.
